Diving in Okinawa

Okinawa - nestled between mountains in the jungle, white sandy beaches, and a fascinating underwater world.

Okinawa Beach Motobo
Motobo Beach

The Okinawa Prefecture, consisting of approximately 160 islands, is located at the southernmost tip of Japan. The temperate climate, comparable to Hawaii, Miami, or Cancun, allows for exploration of the breathtaking nature throughout the year. Just a three-hour flight from Tokyo, visitors are greeted by the impressive landscape of Okinawa.

Thanks to consistently warm temperatures, Okinawa offers opportunities to enjoy its beautiful nature year-round. In the winter months, the air temperature typically hovers around 19 degrees Celsius, with a water temperature of at least 22 degrees Celsius and fewer rainy days. In the summer, both air and water temperatures rise to a pleasant 29 degrees Celsius, though there are more rainy days.

During my stay in Okinawa, I focused on exploring the main island, which offers not only impressive natural activities but also a variety of attractions in the capital city of Naha.

For a visit to Okinawa, it is advisable to obtain an international driver's license in advance, or if you are from Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Italy, or Taiwan, to get a translation of your license at the JAF office in Tokyo. To travel outside the capital, a rental car is necessary, as public transportation is scarce on Okinawa. However, rental car prices are relatively affordable.

My hotel was located in the northern part of the island, in the Motobo district. As you venture further north on the main island, the nature becomes increasingly impressive. The On the Beach Lue Hotel & Restaurant is situated idyllically on its own small private beach and is well-connected to Oceanstreet. However, short car rides are necessary for lunch and dinner since there are not many restaurant options in the immediate vicinity. The compromises in dining choices, however, are compensated by the breathtaking nature and balconies offering a direct view of the beautiful beach and impressive sunsets.

However, in close proximity to the hotel is the small diving and water sports school run by Toya Kazunori - Cosmic Ocean. Toya is not only an incredibly personable individual but also offers dives for those without a diving license, always prioritizing the safety and well-being of his diving students while exploring truly fantastic dive spots. If, like me, you possess a diving certification, you can also dive deeper and explore larger reefs. Motobo and the beaches further north, where Toya takes you with his small bus, offer incredible diving experiences where you can discover numerous species of fish, rays, sea snakes, turtles, and other marine life. In addition to diving courses, Toya also provides a variety of other activities related to the waters of Okinawa, including snorkeling, stand-up paddling, and kayaking. A good alternative for those who like to make their diving license is also the diving school All Blue Divers.

But enough of the warm words - now follows a brief glimpse of the underwater world of Okinawa.

Mountain Hiking Okinawa

For nature enthusiasts, Okinawa not only offers fantastic diving opportunities but also year-round beautiful hiking trails through a jungle-like mountain landscape. The hiking paths, well-marked as is customary throughout Japan, are in good condition, and reaching the summits rewards hikers with breathtaking views over the entire island.

If you find yourself getting bored amid all the nature and seclusion, a stay in the capital city of Naha is definitely worthwhile. In addition to lively izakayas and small karaoke bars, Naha also offers many exciting cultural highlights.

Goya Champuru Okinawa Naha

In many of the restaurants and izakayas, you'll find the typical Okinawan dish, Goya Champuru, a stir-fry consisting of bitter melon (Goya) with tofu, pork, eggs, and other ingredients. Even though its taste may take some getting used to at first, it is considered a highly nutritious superfood, and people in Okinawa claim that the Goya fruit is one of the reasons why the inhabitants of Okinawa achieve the world's highest life expectancy.

Last but not least, here are my top recommendations for Naha.
