Cherry Blossoms in Tokyo - Hanami in Ueno and Yoyogi Park

Updated: Apr 14

It's Saturday and the sun is shining with a pleasant 24 degrees Celsius. As spring announces its arrival in Tokyo, the city blossoms in the truest sense of the word. Especially in the expansive green spaces of Ueno Park and Yoyogi Park, a spectacle unfolds that captivates visitors from around the world year after year: the cherry blossoms (Sakura). Both parks are easily accessible by public transportation and are located on Tokyo's famous circular Yamanote Line.

Ueno Park, an oasis of tranquility amidst the bustling activity of Tokyo, becomes a true sea of flowers during cherry blossom season. The delicate pink and white blossoms adorn the branches of the cherry trees, bathing the park in a special light. Here, locals and tourists alike gather to admire the spectacle of nature. The atmosphere is characterized by serenity and reverence for the beauty of nature. At this time of year, Japan's soft-serve ice cream season begins anew, featuring special flavors like matcha and black tea.

But it's not just in Ueno Park; Tokyo blooms in full splendor in spring in Yoyogi Park as well. In addition to the sight of cherry blossoms, a special highlight awaits here: the annual dog competition. Dogs of all sizes and breeds are proudly presented by their owners, while the cherry trees in the background create a picturesque backdrop. It's a celebration for animal lovers and a welcome diversion from the traditional Hanami festival.

The cherry blossom serves as a reminder of new beginnings and the transience of life.

The Hanami festivals, which take place throughout Japan in spring, pay homage to the cherry blossom while symbolizing both new beginnings and the transience of life. Under the blooming cherry trees, families, friends, and colleagues gather for extensive picnics (Hanami), where brought-along meals (Bento) and drinks are enjoyed together. The atmosphere is lively, people laugh, sing, and relish the shared time under the canopy of blossoms - completely detached from the otherwise hectic and stressful life in the metropolis.

Early in the day, one can already witness many drunken but always cheerful Japanese people sitting on their blue mats (Hanami-bukuro) under the cherry blossom trees. Alcohol flows freely, yet instead of a loud and unpleasant atmosphere, there is a warm and open mood. Strangers quickly become friends, and laughter and singing echo into the late hours of the evening.

The cherry blossom season in Tokyo is a feast for the senses and a time of joy and community. Whether in Ueno Park, Yoyogi Park, or other places in the city, the Sakura enchants not only with its beauty but also with its ability to open people's hearts and connect them with each other.

During the cherry blossom season, tourism in Japan always reaches its peak. Consequently, this wonderful time of year comes with higher flight and hotel prices and longer waiting times at attractions. However, with good planning, the journey is definitely worth it!
