Checklist: Return Journey

Your time in Japan is coming to an end, and it's time to prepare for your return journey. Here are some points to consider.

Book your return flight

It is advisable to book your return flight in advance, either together with your outbound flight or flexibly, depending on your preferences. A flexible return flight allows you to determine the exact date later, while booking a fixed flight can save you costs. Alternatively, you can book your return flight later, but this is usually more expensive and may require higher financial requirements for the visa. The flexibility to book the return flight later allows for more spontaneous decisions, including layovers on the way back to Germany.

Making other trips on the way back home

If you have time, you could make stopovers to visit friends in other countries. Exchanging culture and local knowledge is often an enriching experience. These stopovers may also be more cost-effective if they are on the way back.

Return your Alien Card

If you leave Japan before your Working Holiday Visa expires and do not intend to return with this visa, you can surrender your Alien Card when leaving the country. However, it is also possible to have it invalidated upon departure. This way, you can keep it as a memento of your adventure.

Packing for the journey home

Packing for the return journey can be a challenge, especially if you've acquired items during your stay in Japan. It's advisable to sort through and give away or dispose of less essential items. Other work and travelers or new Japan travelers often appreciate practical gifts like kitchen utensils, books, and adapters.
